Festivals in Bologna, Modena and Parma: What to Know Before You Go

Emilia-Romagna’s three main cities run distinct festival calendars that do not overlap much — Bologna leans towards art and music, Modena hosts the best free philosophy festival in Europe, Parma goes deep on opera and cured meat. If you are timing a visit around an event, the following covers the ones worth planning for.

Bologna

Arte Fiera and ART CITY Bologna — February

Arte Fiera is one of Italy’s longest-running contemporary art fairs, held at BolognaFiere every February (2026: 5–8 February). The parallel ART CITY programme extends into the city itself — museums open late, installations appear in public spaces, and most ART CITY events are free. If you are not in the art market, the public programme is the practical reason to visit.

Mortadella Please! — Autumn

Running since 2007, this is the annual festival dedicated to Bologna’s most famous cured meat. Chefs interpret mortadella across several days of tastings and demonstrations in the city centre. Exact dates vary each year, usually late October. Entry is free.

Bologna Jazz Festival — October/November

One of the oldest jazz festivals in Italy, spread across venues across the city over several weeks. The programme mixes free outdoor performances with ticketed concerts. It has been running long enough to draw serious musicians; it is not a tourist-facing event.

Danza Urbana — September

Six days of free outdoor dance performances in public spaces across Bologna. The format is deliberately accessible — performances take place where people already are, in piazzas, courtyards and arcades, without requiring tickets or a theatre seat.

Modena

Festival Filosofia — September

This is the one worth knowing about. The Festival Filosofia is held across three cities — Modena, Carpi, and Sassuolo — every September, and nearly all of its 200 events are free: lectures, exhibitions, theatrical performances, open conversations. In 2026 the theme is “Caos” (Chaos); the festival runs 18–20 September. Speakers are working philosophers and thinkers, not popularisers. Arrive early for the main lectures — no tickets, first-come, first-served. For a free public event the quality is unusually high.

Jazz Open Modena — July

Free outdoor jazz concerts in Piazza Roma, 13–18 July 2026. The location — the main square — makes these easy to catch without advance planning. Evenings only.

Parma

Festival Verdi — October

The annual opera festival in Parma runs through October, with performances at the Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Verdi in Busseto — Verdi’s birthplace, 35km from the city. The 2026 programme (1–25 October) includes Alzira, Aida, Nabucodonosor, a Gala Verdiano, and the Messa da Requiem. Book tickets through teatroregioparma.it in advance — the main productions sell out. The Parma audience is famously demanding, which keeps production standards high.

Festival del Prosciutto di Parma — September

Three days in early September dedicated to Prosciutto di Parma PDO. Producers set up in the historic centre with tastings, guided visits to curing facilities, and chef demonstrations. The 2025 edition ran 5–7 September; the 2026 dates follow the same pattern. Entry is free. For a year-round visit to a working prosciutto producer — with transport included — our Foodies Delight food tour combines a curing house with Parmigiano Reggiano and balsamic vinegar producers in a single half-day.

Yes — the vast majority of events are free, including the main lectures held outdoors in city squares. A small number of master classes require a ticket, which is also free but must be collected in advance. No registration is needed for the main programme; turn up early as popular lectures fill quickly.

When is the Parma Ham Festival?

The Festival del Prosciutto di Parma takes place in early September each year in Parma’s historic centre. The 2025 edition ran 5–7 September. Entry is free. Producers offer tastings and guided visits to curing houses during the festival days.

What food festivals take place in Emilia-Romagna?

The main food festivals include the Festival del Prosciutto di Parma (September, Parma), Mortadella Please! The region also has truffle fairs in the Apennine villages during October and November, the most prominent being at Sant’Agata Feltria.

September and October are the most concentrated months — the Festival Filosofia (Modena, September), Festival del Prosciutto (Parma, September), Danza Urbana (Bologna, September), and Festival Verdi (Parma, October) all fall within this window. February has Arte Fiera in Bologna if contemporary art is the priority. Summer is quieter for festivals but Jazz Open Modena runs in July.
