Modena is the birthplace of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar — a product aged for a minimum of 12 years in a battery of progressively smaller wooden barrels, protected by DOP status, and produced nowhere else on earth. If you want to buy genuine, high-quality balsamic vinegar, the five places below are all within walking distance of the city centre and between them cover every price point and style, from everyday condiment-grade bottles to 25-year aged DOP vinegar in its distinctive small bottle. If you would rather experience the production process first-hand, scroll down for our balsamic vinegar tour recommendation.
1. Enoteca Ducale
Address: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 41121 Modena
Hours: 9 AM – 7 PM (closed Monday)
Enoteca Ducale sits within 250 metres of the city centre and is one of the most accessible starting points for balsamic vinegar shopping in Modena. The shop stocks balsamic from Acetaia Leonardi across the full range — from young everyday-use vinegars up to 100-year-aged bottles. The owner is hands-on and happy to guide you through the selection, explain the differences between ageing grades, and let you taste before you buy. The shop is also known for its amaretti biscuits and Lambrusco, so do not leave without trying both.
Best buy: Acetaia Leonardi aged balsamic; amaretti and Lambrusco to accompany.
2. Mercato Albinelli
Address: Via Luigi Albinelli, 41100 Modena
Hours: Mon–Sat 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM; Fri–Sat also 6 PM – midnight (closed Sunday)
Mercato Albinelli is Modena’s covered daily market, located right in the city centre. Several vendors sell balsamic vinegar alongside fresh produce, local cheeses, and cured meats. Most stalls offer free tasting sessions, which means you can compare styles and producers side by side before committing to a purchase. You can find everything from young everyday balsamic to certified DOP Traditional Balsamic Vinegar in the protected 100ml bottle. The market atmosphere is as much of the draw as the vinegar itself.
Best buy: Certified DOP Traditional Balsamic Vinegar (12 and 25 years).
3. Acetaia di Giorgio
Address: Via Sandro Cabassi, 41100 Modena (900 m from city centre)
Hours: 9 AM – 6 PM
Acetaia di Giorgio is a family-run producer with more than 150 years of history. Unlike a shop, this is a working acetaia — when you visit, you get a personalised tour of the production facility, an explanation of the ageing process from grape to bottle, and a tasting session at the end. The aged balsamics here are produced on-site in the traditional battery system, and buying directly from the producer means you are getting the real thing. The hospitality is warm and unhurried. Ask to try the 24-year Ciliegio, the Giorgio Primo, and the Carlotta.
Best buy: 25-year Ciliegio; Giorgio Primo.

Join our Foodie's Delight Tour – Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic vinegar & cured meats in one unforgettable day.
The Malpighi family has been producing traditional balsamic vinegar for more than a century, and some of the barrels in their battery date to 1730. The showroom is steps from the city centre and offers guided tastings led by knowledgeable staff who explain the production process in detail. The range extends to 40-year-aged vinegar, and the tasting will help you identify which grade suits your palate. If you prefer a well-balanced, complex balsamic for both cooking and finishing, the 25-year-old is the one to buy.
Best buy: 25-year-old Malpighi Traditional Balsamic Vinegar.

Hours: 11 AM – 6 PM (closed Sunday)
La Consorteria 1966 is located right in the city centre and offers one of the most comprehensive tasting ranges in Modena — from 12-year to 60-year-aged balsamics, including unusual speciality vinegars such as balsamic aged in cherrywood barrels. The English-speaking staff are expert at reading your reactions to the first sample and guiding you toward the style you are most likely to prefer, which takes much of the guesswork out of a first-time purchase. If you are looking for something unique to take home, the cherrywood-aged balsamic is a genuine rarity.
Best buy: Cherrywood-aged balsamic; 25-year traditional for a classic choice.
Practical Tips Before You Buy
All five locations allow you to ship purchases directly to your home country, so you do not need to worry about carrying bottles in your luggage. When buying Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP, look for the distinctive small 100ml bottle sealed with the Consortium label — this is the only format in which genuine DOP traditional balsamic is sold. Anything in a larger bottle or without the consortium seal is commercial-grade balsamic, which is a different (and significantly less expensive) product.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Modena special for balsamic vinegar?
Modena is the birthplace of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP — a product that can only be produced within the province of Modena using local Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes, aged for a minimum of 12 years (or 25 years for the “Extravecchio” grade) in a battery of progressively smaller barrels made from different woods. The unique local climate, grape varieties, and centuries-old production tradition produce a flavour that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The city is home to dozens of acetaie where visitors can see the production process first-hand.
What should you expect when visiting an acetaia in Modena?
A typical acetaia visit includes a guided tour of the production facility — the barrel room (where the batteries of wooden barrels are stored, often in an attic to benefit from the temperature variation between seasons), an explanation of the annual refilling process, and a tasting session. Most tours last 45–90 minutes and conclude with the opportunity to purchase directly from the producer. The best experiences are at smaller family producers like Acetaia di Giorgio, where the tour is personal and unhurried rather than group-based.
What is the difference between DOP Traditional Balsamic Vinegar and supermarket balsamic?
Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP is aged for a minimum of 12 years (or 25 years for Extravecchio), produced from cooked grape must only, and sold exclusively in a distinctive 100ml bottle with a consortium seal. It costs between €40 and several hundred euros depending on age. Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP — the type sold in supermarkets — is a different product: made quickly with wine vinegar and often thickened with caramel, aged for months not years. It is cheaper and suitable for dressings, but bears little resemblance to the traditional DOP product.
What is the best time of year to visit Modena for balsamic vinegar?
The grape harvest (late August to October) is a particularly atmospheric time to visit — you can see the freshly pressed grape must at the start of its long ageing journey. However, acetaie are open year-round and the production process is visible at any time of year. The Aceterie Aperte (Open Acetaie) event in spring and autumn opens many private producers to the public on specific weekends — worth planning around if possible.
Can you combine a balsamic visit with other food experiences in Modena?
Absolutely — Modena is one of the most food-dense cities in Italy. A full food day could combine an acetaia visit with a tour of a Parmigiano Reggiano dairy (the cheese is produced in the surrounding countryside), lunch at a traditional trattoria with tigelle and cured meats, and an afternoon tasting at Mercato Albinelli. Many local guides and operators offer full-day food itineraries that combine all three. Modena also has two Michelin three-star restaurants (Osteria Francescana and Reale) for those looking for a fine dining evening.

I am in Firenze right now and will be here til October 7. I would love to know if there is any place in Firenze where I can buy the DOP Aceto Balsamica but I have googled all sorts of ways and never do any of the responses mention Florence. I would prefer not to have to come over to Bologna and then on to Modena to find this truly sensational condiment. Do you know any place in Firenze where I could find it?
I was in Bologna a few years back and did that fantastic Italian Days tour and that was my first taste. Then on my last visit to Firenze, I went to Mercato Centrale and bought a bottle to take home that was very good but it didn’t have the DOP designation. Now I want to buy one for my daughter as a Christmas present and I would like it to have that designation. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.
